# Postman at Google Summer of Code 2021: Call for Student Proposals

Over the last seven years, [Postman](https://www.postman.com) has grown to become one of the leading software companies in the world, amassing an inspiring global community of more than 17 million developers. As a platform that powers collaboration, we’re dedicated to supporting the exchange of ideas across the API landscape. Being a firm believer in the open source philosophy, we’ve open sourced some of our core modules—[Postman Runtime](https://blog.postman.com/2016/06/14/introducing-postman-runtime-more-power-better-control/), [Collection SDK](https://www.postmanlabs.com/postman-collection/), and [Newman](https://learning.postman.com/docs/postman/collection-runs/command-line-integration-with-newman/), to name a few—to allow developers the flexibility to work with APIs in any environment or workflow. To double down on this DNA of ours and enable developers to work, build, and do more with APIs using the [Postman API Platform](https://www.postman.com/api-platform/), we [recently partnered](https://blog.postman.com/asyncapi-joins-forces-with-postman-future-of-apis/) with [AsyncAPI](https://www.asyncapi.com/). Inspired by OpenAPI for REST, AsyncAPI is an open standard for defining [asynchronous APIs](https://blog.postman.com/understanding-asynchronous-apis/) and tooling to build and manage your event-driven architecture. Read further to learn how AsyncAPI plays a part in this year’s Postman GSoC application. Last year, when we participated in the [Google Summer of Code (GSoC)](https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/) program for the first time, it turned out to be an incredible experience for us and the two students who contributed to Newman and Postman code generator. We are super thrilled to announce that we have yet again been selected to be a mentor organization at Google Summer of Code 2021. We can’t wait to engage and collaborate with students from across the world, and we look forward to all of this year’s amazing project proposals.

## What is Google Summer of Code (GSoC)?

 GSoC is a global program focused on bringing more student developers into open source software development. Students work with an open source organization on a 10-week programming project during their break from school.  If you’re a student interested in working with Postman during GSoC 2021, we’ve assembled for you a list of 13 ideas under the following three categories: ### 1. Newman

 Newman is Postman’s command-line tool for running and testing a [Postman Collection](https://www.postman.com/collection/) as part of any pipeline. This tool makes Postman Collections a unit of compute that can be baked into the software development lifecycle and leveraged as API truth wherever it’s needed.  The OpenAPI Specification (OAS) is a community-driven open specification within the [OpenAPI Initiative](https://www.openapis.org/), a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project. OAS empowers the API community with a common, machine-readable way of defining the surface area of any API that uses the HTTP 1.1 protocol as a transport. Postman has [joined the OpenAPI initiative](https://blog.postman.com/postman-joins-openapi-initiative/) and continues to invest in open source tooling built around it.  AsyncAPI is an open source project. The initiative works on AsyncAPI specification and tools for the project. It's goal is to make it easier to build and maintain event-driven architectures. Postman actively supports the project and has Postmanauts dedicated to working on AsyncAPI. This is the primary channel of communication for everything GSoC-related at Postman. There’s a wide range of projects that you can start working on in the Google Summer of Code program—from small tasks to major features. If you have a new feature in mind, we’d love to hear it. ## Submit your proposal on time

 You can find the complete Google Summer of Code program timeline [here](https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/how-it-works/#timeline). Students can begin [registering and submitting project proposals](https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/5554758561038336/) to mentor organizations—including Postman—on March 29, 2021. **All proposals must be submitted by April 13, 2021 at 11:00 (PDT) / 23:30 (IST).** We look forward to seeing your proposals for a happy summer of coding.
